Oil-degrading bacterial strains utilize hydrocarbons and heavy petroleum fractions as an energy source for growth and metabolism. Within the first day after the introduction of a biological product, the microorganisms become activated. Their population increases, initiating an irreversible process that breaks down petroleum products into environmentally safe, non-toxic metabolic byproducts. Once the degradation of the mineral oil is complete, the microbial population, deprived of its nutrient source, dies off — thereby serving as a food source that stimulates the growth of indigenous microflora.
